Role Model Programs
Increasing changes in family dynamics and increased work demands have left many children across the nation without proper adult role models. In fact, 25 percent of today’s children and youth grow up with only one parent in the home. This lack of adult mentors is starting to take a toll on society as a whole and has manifest itself in the form of poor grades, high percentage of high school drop outs, drug use, teenage pregnancy, and gangs—just to name a few. But what’s more is that we are left with a rather large problem that needs to be solved, and solved quickly.
This is where role model programs come in. Role model programs could very well be part of the solution that helps our children and youth grow up to be responsible, productive members of society. And the great thing about role model programs is that they do not take a lot of funding to get started and can be run on a largely volunteer basis.
But how do role model programs work? These helpful programs utilize the skills and knowledge of a responsible adult role model who can take the time to listen to and care about the children and youth that he or she is mentoring. A role model can be turned to when a child or teen has questions, concerns, or is wondering what to do in a certain situation. It doesn’t take a lot to get role model programs in your community, why not start building one today?
