Student Mentoring Program
Youth mentoring programs work best when they consist of a reliable relationship between a youth and an adult mentor over an extended period of time (such as the student’s high school years). During youth mentoring programs, an adult mentor is there to provide support and guidance for a youth who greatly needs the influence of a positive adult role model in his or her life. Children and teens who are typically involved in youth mentoring programs are most often going through difficult situations or come from a family background that is not ideal. But though this is usually the case, any child or teen can benefit greatly from youth mentoring programs and can learn to be more self-confident and learn skills that will help them be better prepared for the future.
But who qualifies to be a successful youth mentor in youth mentoring programs? A good youth mentor is someone who can influence children and youth for the good and can show those individuals that they are important. A good youth mentor also needs to be available to help children or youth over an extended period of time, so that a relationship of trust can be established and maintained. And because the adult mentor in youth mentoring programs is one of a youth’s only reliable role models, it is imperative that the role model be reliable and available for the youth whenever necessary. This way, a successful youth and mentor relationship can be established and maintained for as long as needed.
